The AENJ State Exhibition for Youth Art Month occurred on March 23rd, 2024 at Grounds For Sculpture, showcasing the dynamic artistic environment that is thriving throughout the state of New Jersey. This is an annual event that is organized by the Art Educators of New Jersey (AENJ) which exhibits unique visual art from all over New Jersey. This year, a total of 71 students participated from 52 different schools in Mercer, Warren, Monmouth, Morris, Bergen, Middlesex, Somerset, Hunterdon, Burlington, Camden, Union, Ocean, Essex, Hudson, and Sussex counties, with students in every grade K-12 getting involved. Additional creative diversity was demonstrated through the different art mediums like acrylic, color pencil, charcoal, woodburning, photography, and much more.
Teachers from each participating school served as a bridge between students and the exhibition by gathering art from students of their choosing (one piece per student) and sending these pieces to the two chairpersons of their county for them to judge and evaluate. These chairpersons picked out the best pieces to be displayed (the number of pieces picked out is based on the population of the county). Although selective, this group endeavor makes attendees and participants feel proud of each other as a community. This is an event that unites communities with a common goal of celebrating art, bringing educators and aspiring young artists closer.
Our very own Lawrence High School art teacher, Ms. Davis served as a mentor for Xintong Si from Lawrence High School whose drawing was one of the seven submissions that were chosen for display at the exhibition. In addition to being a committed teacher, Ms. Davis is also one of the two chairpersons for Mercer County and the entire state of New Jersey. The AENJ persists in cultivating a productive atmosphere that commemorates and enhances the arts of our young artists, as well as our art teachers who elevate young artists’ success.
